Phase 5 - Design & Results

The design intention is to combine soft and hard activities ; Production. process and products.
To enable user to experience different activities in different designated spaces.

Mood and materiality is more of industrial in the ground floor which is enveloped by nature indoors by the exterior through transparency materials

The first floor has contrast of worlds, soft and hard in materiality creates different mood and experiences to the end users.

Redefining spa, is a different approach by designer to design this in an eco friendly manner where it contrasts the usual spa rooms with water running continuously and hygienically cautious users avoid such spa tubs.
This also allows users to move from one spa box to another and experience different typology that is offered.

This allows users to experience different thermal contradictions, giving sensorial experiences that produces contradictions of conventional notions of comfort. The human body is capable of , excited by thermal extremities . In the conception of Roman bath complex. occupants move from extremity (caldarium) to extremity (Frigidarium), Managing their own thermal delight.

As opposed to a liquid bath, JariJari spa is a radiant one that co mingles extremities into singular thermal contradictions. The user rolls or crawls under the monolithic structure and is confronted with another world inside.

Phase 4 - Design Exploration

Transmorph is a cube manipulation study of a simple solid cube that is transformed into different models through various course of actions such as twist, turn, attach, detach or overlap/cut.
This study helped in studying various cubic transformation that was later moulded into spaces.

The above manipulation is of cubes creates numerous study exploration of solids and voids, angular aperture that maybe torn down into pieces for further design process.

Further exploration of cubes by slotting in and out on a standard size box, this study helps in understanding diversity in openings  and different levels of floors. This spatial study would be suitable for garden boxes in the proposed project.
Continuation of experimentation through sketches in order to mould out spaces that may be utilized in the design process. The Idea is to create continuity between floors and diminish traditional ceilings, utilization of double volume high ceiling would enable a sculptural space that creates unusual visibility between users.

Model and sketch manipulative montage to combine interior to exterior , study of various openings and possibility of achieving good light perception into the interior through the criss cross angular openings.
Box is broken through various stages in order to create unusual and unintentional openings, This helps to determine some forms that maybe suitable for  structural purposes in design stage.
Angularity is achieved through various cube manipulation such turn , cut, fold or bend. Experimental model to study slanting walls and massive angular structures for interiors.

The angular structures is inspired from the jarijari (fingers) structure, it creates the feeling of being  held by massive fingers. This sort of user experience is to be achieved for the final outcome.

Conceptual sketch on jarijari spa that creates a new definition of spa in terms of form , material, environment and structure which then produces an experience for the occupant.

Model study on hanging spa structures from the top ceiling, allows free flow of circulation at the bottom, diminishes fixed walls that divide rooms.

Phase 3 - Big Idea

Designer proposes the idea of utilizing hands as the main design language and an inspiration to design upon subject matter. To suit the programming and targeted users - fingers (Jari Jari) movements will be used for further design process. This brings about the unity and support through a three dimensional space.

Subject matter, fingers is then transformed into design where it is used as several design components, Mainly the designer proposes to use this as a structural component for support purposes, metaphorically support means the comfort and security one gets while in the space.

The abstract conceptual programming highlights on the overall ambience of this healing center which is a combination of mixed materiality that is in harmony with nature. Different mood is carefully laid out to evoke the user's sensorial experiences through variety of programming proposed for the work.

The overall idea of the proposed programming is to achieve the ideals aforementioned, learning and training of skills, entrepreneurship, recognition and healing through collective programming by collaborating mixed communities for rare but new interaction to sustain business and economic sector of this project with support of involved individuals.

Designer emphasizes on self help and growth theory of healing, that influences the health condition of survivors through holistic healing (aromatherapy) through the process survivors create products with the aim of gaining revenue, this marks the sustainability of the proposed project.

A new perception creates awareness and provides knowledge to public , this will give a different yet improved image of the survivors hence acceptance or awareness to the least.

Phase 2 - Solutions

Salutogenesis. Meaning “the origins of health,” this alternative model of care deals with the relationships between stress, wellness, and human health. Salutogenic design, as I've come to define it, focuses on the positive impact of design on human health. It’s a measurable aspect of design that can help a building’s inhabitants operate at their peak performance. Additionally, it can help them maintain physical and mental well-being, actually helping them lead healthier and potentially longer lives. It is the ultimate investment in people, in an architectural sense.

Essential oils support physical and emotional wellbeing, ones sense of smell is the most primal sense.
Scents have powerful effect on how one thinks, behaves and feels therefore the author proposes lavender as a natural herb as the main ingredient in the whole space.
Lavender is also one of the most expensive herb and value added products cost even more, The idea of using this is to lure sex workers on the benefits of it and to maintain their stay in this farm.

Holistic healing this approach enables one to engage and develop the whole person on different levels, physical, emotional and mental and spiritual.  Its the concept that human being is multi dimensional with conscious and unconscious aspects, rational and irrational aspects.

Phase 1 - Issue

ISSU
We usually tend to  oversee needy  minorities in our community and become ignorant towards societies that have labels and to people who have no benefit to us. From above graphical presentation, designer narrows down the focus to sex workers and what are the influences and  consequences of having them do what they do in the first place. With depth research and analysis a few photographic manipulations are portrayed below to explain the narration and what reality of their lives is all about.
Prostitution is viewed as indecent and highly immoral, women involved in this field risk their social standing within the community, They are deprived from the basic human rights and lack of social security hence they face severe forms of violation that induces fear of voicing out or left unheard therefore not enough effort is put into rescuing these victims because of how they are carved in the eyes if public and a mindset that is put down on how less important they are in comparison to other humanitarian crisis victims.

Above photographic manipulation narrates on severity of issue that requires intense help and support the public. How a victim is left helpless behind these little windows, alleys and the dark side . Just like other victims these ones should be given a second chance to live a better life and to be given the support they need in order to stand up for themselves.

The untold truth is a lot these victims suffer and some may be too young to have been forced to join into this industry and to be sold out as commodity and to have an actual selling price. Some of this victims require help and some require support and some require a platform from which they can earn a living in a more dignified manner.

The most important aspect of solving this issue is to select a site that is suitable and has appropriate context to propose this project. The criteria is to have it located in a suburban area which Cameron Highlands, pahang Malaysia. This is known as a healthy hillstation  due to its cool temperature throughout the annual period which is why locals and foreigners tend to visit as a heat escape retreat.

The selected site is the Hill view inn which is currently a homestay for tourist in cameron highlands, pahang, it is located in Tanah Rata which is mainly upper class district comparison to others such as Brinchang or Tringkap .

Site manifestation , this was to feel the intangibles and tangibles of the space, how one feels . The industrialization is killing the mother nature in cameron highlands due to clearance of land rather than perseverance
Nature that nurtures, this is yield from emotional experiences of user, how the site makes one feel like with the nature surrounded lands, mother's womb, a place that provides purity, nature, support and comfort.

Phase 3 - Final Design & Outcome

The Ground floor proposed, the idea is to enhance the back alley so as per designers proposal. The main entrance to the building is at the back, after generating curiosity and attraction at the frontier, users will be directed to the  back alley.

Second floors void allows users/ visitors to enjoy the ground floor live cooking and play area as they walk through the curved walls of intimacy heading into the chill and bar area.

Details and technicality of the display zone using red perforated metal with panels of frost or clear glass to enhance the teaser programming.

The above section shows one of the featured spiral staircase joint with slide that allows the interaction between people circulating  in the space, particularly from first floor one can slide down to Ground floor having others see the excitement and encourage to use it.

Featured detail of slide and spiral staircase, the idea of using this is to fit the curvature flow and create the sensuality feel in the vertical circulation too.

Phase 2 - Understanding & Creation

This conceptual study of fire fly was inspired from the life cycle of a fire fly such as its survival and mating methodology which is to lure the male fire fly by flashing luminous for mating. Application of this subject matter to the micro community that interested the observer which is the wandering sex workers in Petaling street.  This was fascinating and led to more thorough and in depth research in order to know and learn about this community which has been labelled as unethical and dirt in the society.

Above graphical illustration highlights on the activities and atmosphere/ambiance of the actually petaling street, Malaysia is ranked as 8th in the world to be having 150000 sex workers, after learning about these sex workers and their lifestyle it gave to the rise of a spatial project that can bring these sex workers together with other people in the society in order to change the perception they are labelled with.

Understanding of spaces using model study, where by laces and fragments of fire fly is broken and carved into unexpected spaces.

Eventually after various trial and errors, Ribbon became the main language of spatial development, this also tallies with the concept of feminine, curvature and curves representing woman in most cases.  This would enhance the space to its aesthetic value and contribute to the circulation and flow of the space from one zone to another.

collaboration between conceptual model and conceptual sketches formed spaces using ribbon but in order to understand the form and flow of this proposed design direction it is important to use existing precedent study to improvise or innovate something new out of it .

This ribbon chapel by Hiroshi architects  inspired further models and sketch study using paper and belts to understand the  forms flow for further design process.

Ribbon is used as the main language of circulation that creates intimate, unseen, unknown spaces and hence contributes the programming aspect of this design proposal.
The programming is divided into 4 main zones, which different than the usual ones. The space is designed with the aim of letting users feel sexy but not to have sex,  the zones are as follows :  women wearing products sold tease through frosty glass display at the facade attracting and creating curiosity at different interval, once an individual enters the space he or she is directed to the foreplay zone which consists of specialised swings and slide, one can play and watch the crafting of their main and selling product, The Edible lingerie.  Some may be served as part of the entertainment.

Therefore, present to you the first Edible lingerie brand in Malaysia, these products are live exhibited by the users to advertise the products better,  visitors face intimacy through the intimate apparels worn and displayed in the space, upon liking a certain product visitors may purchase and wear it to the role play at the second floor dancing area, where women wearing these will be dancing in jars and enjoy eating of candies each other, finally the flow directs to the bar and chill area where users just chill and rest.

Above is the comparison of zoning that was proposed early and refined with changes in the programming.

The whole phase helped me to explore a lot of different possibilities and alternatives in terms of designing something out of my usual choices, research and study on programming of such controversial topic as it includes the legal matters and laws that may be allowed and so on.  Model study and sketches influenced the conceptual study &  final design outcome.
